Our mission
We are an association dedicated to building a fairer society, where everyone can flourish within a culture of fairness and respect. We work to raise public awareness of social justice issues, promote a better understanding of the mechanisms that perpetuate inequalities, and actively support marginalised communities by providing them with the resources they need.
Our actions
To fulfil our vision, we are developing a variety of initiatives.
Interdisciplinary collaborations
We build partnerships between academic and non-academic institutions, locally and internationally, with a particular focus on issues related to social justice and forced migration.
Educational and awareness-raising projects
We design and run workshops, training courses, conferences and discussion forums to encourage learning and reflection, while producing a variety of educational materials.
Publications
We publish books for children and adults to promote the values of inclusion, justice and diversity.
Financial support
We are actively seeking public and private funding to ensure the success and sustainability of our projects.
Our values
The association is independent of any ideological, political or religious orientation. We stand for equality and reject all forms of ethnic or religious discrimination. Our commitment is based on principles of integrity and inclusion.
Origin of the name Alama
The name Alama evokes a rich diversity of meanings from different languages, all linked to the values and themes of our association:
Alma: nourishing and protective in Latin (from the verb alere); soul in Spanish and Portuguese; salt water in Greek.
Aelm: science in Arabic.
Alam: knowledge and wisdom in Tagalog; the (whole) world and universe in several languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Hindi, Urdu...).
Qalam: pencil or reed pen used for calligraphy in Arabic (pronounced alam in Yaffa).
Muaellam-ah, Mutaellam-ah: teacher or student in Arabicc.
Finally, Alma is also a given name in different cultures.
The tree symbol
Our logo, representing a tree, embodies both rooting and flowering, concepts that are rich in meaning for our association, particularly in relation to the theme of migration. The tree is a powerful symbol of transformation: it links the past to the present, the here to the elsewhere, and illustrates the strength of those who, like its branches, reach out to find new opportunities while remaining firmly rooted in their roots.
Alama is about honouring identities, promoting exchange and celebrating the richness of human experiences.
